I didn’t sell a painting but was it a failure?

My first participation in the annual Water Colour Society of Ireland wasn’t a success when it came to sales of my art. I wouldn’t say it was a failure because of that though. I was, and am still thrilled to be a part of the whole thing. I wasn’t there myself, a dear friend helped with delivering the watercolours to the exhibition and then picked them up for me when the event came to an end.

It’s an interesting dilemma, why do we artists spend a small fortune getting work framed knowing full well that there is a more than good chance the works will not be sold. If we do sell a watercolour the gallery or the society will want it’s commision. No wonder artists are poor! I have no answer, it’s just the way it is.

I am still positive to the whole thing. I will be exhibiting next year again if they will have me.

Water Colour Society of Ireland exhibition begins, it’s a big moment for me

The Water Colour Society of Ireland’s 166th exhibition begins and I am very proud to be included for the first time. It’s such a pity I cannot be there for the opening but I am just delighted to have been accepted into the fine room of Irish watercolour art.If you are in Dublin the exhibition opens on the 25th of September and runs until the 10th of October. Farmleigh Gallery, Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, 10am – 5pm daily.

With the help of my wife I gathered up all my watercolours and packed them into the car last night. It’s always a strange feeling coming to the end of something, be it a holiday abroad or an exhibition in Stockholm.

The exhibition was a success in many ways but to be honest I didn’t sell so many watercolours, enough to break even but no more than that. On the positive side though I really appreciated the words of encouragement I received from all the people who dropped by. Words of praise like, ‘you have developed so much in such a short time’ to ‘your art is at a real high level’ – this really charges my enthusiasm to keep on trying. One stroke at a time, a little better, a little wiser.

Right now, the way I feel is that I will not be having a solo exhibition anytime soon. I just want to focus on improving, I look forward to getting back into my routine of painting in the morning, I have many ideas on where I want to go with my art. That was one of the good things to come out of the exhibition, I had all my art from the last two years up on the walls, I had time to look and analyse them, to see which direction I would like to go. Some watercolours represented the old me where as a number show hints of where I am heading. Really exciting, I can’t wait to get back painting again. In that way, the exhibition was indeed a success.

An exhibition of my watercolours!

Hello and welcome,
My watercolour exhibition opens at Rääf Gallery, 11.00 Saturday 21st of September, Hornsgatan 32, Stockholm.
Exhibition ends 25th of September 18.00.
It’s kinda spontaneous this exhibition, I knew I was probably too late to book a gallery for the autumn but I checked and Gallery Rääf did have a free week in September. I said, great! I’ll take it. That was two weeks ago. If you follow this blog you know that I have been in France since then so now I have only two weeks to get the exhibition in order.
There is nothing like a tight deadline to focus the mind!

My watercolour exhibition runs from the 21 – 25th of September 2019. The opening is Saturday the 21st at 11.00.

Edsvik National Watercolour Exhibition

I attended the opening of Edsvik’s National Watercolour Exhibition last night. It was fun having one of my paintings on display. The exhibition runs until the 18th of April.
