Sketching at the Swedish Museum of Natural History

I had a lot of fun today sketching at the Swedish Museum of Natural History. I met up with Nina Johansson and Marie Flood. I had never visited the museum before so I began the day by taking a tour of the place. It was very interesting. I found it a bit uncomfortable looking at so many stuffed animals but then again they did not move, which makes life easier for a sketcher. I discovered today that Polar bears are very difficult to draw and watercolouring in a dimly lit museum is challenging to say the least. …But like I said in the beginning, it was fun.

Sketching at Ikea

I went sketching at Ikea today together with super-talented Nina Johansson. We are part of a small group here in Stockholm that meet once a month to sketch. At this time of the year it is too cold to be outside so we choose an indoor location. Ikea was a fun place to be, lots of interesting perspectives, colours and details. I bought a few things for my kitchen after we had finished sketching. 🙂

Dieselverkstaden

I spent Sunday afternoon sketching at Dieselverkstaden with a newly formed Stockholm sketching group called ‘Skissa i Stockholm’. A fun day was had by all and I’m quite sure we will be meeting again very soon.

On the way to work…

The biggest problem I have and I guess everybody else is in the same boat, is finding time in ones busy life for hobby activities. I have found that my lunch break is a good time to do a little sketch. Yesterday I tried sketching in the morning, I just took an earlier bus to work and this gave me 15 minutes to have some quality time before arriving at my office desk. Holidays is also a good time to sketch, I need more holidays! 🙂

Meeting the Urban Sketchers

A sketch by David Meldrum of Luis Simöes
Luis sketches in Stockholm.

I met Nina Johansson and Luis Simöes from Urban Sketchers last weekend, It was a very inspirational meeting. We sat outside a café on Nybrogatan and chatting but mostly sketched. I’m new to this Urban Sketching thing so it was a bit difficult just drawing whatever was in front of you. In the end I wanted to draw the shop opposite but Luis was in the way so I drew him too, it was fun! Luis told me to use better paper, which I took onboard. I also learned that composition is so important when Sketching, a quick drawing will never look good if it is squeezed into the confines of a page, not given enough white space to breath in other words.

Luis Simöes is currently on a World Sketching Tour, check out his blog and see where he has been sketching and where he plans to visit.
